Morning vs. Evening Skincare Routine: Should They Differ?

Our skin requires different care and nourishment depending on the time of day so it’s important to adjust your skincare routine to meet these specific needs. For instance, your morning routine should include a product with SPF to protect skin from harmful UV exposure; however, your skin does not require this type of protection during the evening hours.

Morning Routine

Your morning skincare routine should focus on protecting your skin from free radicals and other cell-damaging environmental factors while also providing subtle hydration to keep your oil production under control.

Cleanse

Use a gentle cleanser that effectively removes bacteria and debris but keeps your skin’s natural protective oils intact.

Tone

Use a toner free from harsh ingredients such as alcohol to balance your skin’s pH while infusing it with nutrients and moisture.

Eye Cream

Use a pea-sized amount around the delicate eye area using a light touch.

Serum

It’s best to choose a serum that hydrates and protects your skin for your morning routine.  In addition, choose one that is rich in antioxidants and will help brighten your complexion. Our GUNILLA™ Cell Rejuvenator is a great choice because it infuses the skin with botanical nutrients and collagen making the skin appear plump and nourished.

Moisturize

Apply a lightweight moisturizer to keep skin hydrated throughout the day without feeling too heavy. Our LEROSETT® Moisture Matte is a great moisturizer to use in the morning because it is oil-free and keeps the skin feeling moisturized all day.

SPF

Always apply an SPF or a moisturizer containing SPF. Protecting your skin from the sun is always a must.

Evening Routine

Your skin is in “repair mode” during the evening hours and it’s permeability increases allowing active ingredients to absorb. Therefore, your nightly skin care routine should also focus on calming, healing and clearing pores of dead skin cells and make up that can build up during the day.

Remove Make-up

Use a make-up removing wipe or any make-up dissolving product to remove the majority of your makeup before cleansing.

Cleanse

Use a gentle cleanser that effectively removes bacteria and debris but keeps your skin’s natural protective oils intact.

Exfoliate  (2-3 times weekly)

We recommend exfoliating your skin at least 2-3 times per week with a gentle scrub or cleansing brush.  It’s best not to exfoliate too often as this can lead to inflammation, thinning of the skin and premature aging. To find out more about the different methods of exfoliation check out our blog post HERE.

Tone

Use a toner free from harsh ingredients such as alcohol to balance your skin’s pH while infusing it with nutrients and moisture.

Eye Cream

Apply a lightweight moisturizer to keep skin hydrated throughout the day without feeling too heavy.

Serum/ Resurfacing Treatment

For your evening routine, opt for a serum that helps to resurface and repair your skin. Night serums usually have exfoliation properties due to the number of chemical exfoliants in them, such as glycolic acid. These chemical exfoliants gently dissolve dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and promote cell turnover. Exfoliation can be done during this step as instead. These types of serums make skin hypersensitive to UVA rays, which is why it’s best to apply these serums in the evening.

Moisturize

For your evening routine, apply a rich moisturizer that will help keep your skin hydrated throughout the night while you’re sleeping. Our GUNILLA™  Deep Skin Moisturizer with Ceramides is a great option!
