What are the Benefits of Botanical Ingredients?
Botanical ingredients are having their moment in skincare, and for once the hype has a real foundation. Plant extracts are naturally rich in antioxidants, soothing compounds, vitamins, minerals, and protective phytonutrients that help skin look healthier, calmer, and more resilient. They can support the skin barrier, help reduce the look of irritation and redness, and defend against everyday stressors that contribute to dullness and visible aging.
But here’s the part most brands skip: for botanical skincare to work at its best, the formula has to be truly plant-based, not just “botanical-themed.” Many products list a few extracts near the bottom of the label, while the formula is still mostly water. That’s fine, but it’s not the same as a formula where plants form the foundation.
What “botanical” really means
Botanical extracts are concentrated components derived from plants, including leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, and bark. They’re produced through careful extraction methods that isolate beneficial plant compounds, yielding a purified extract for use in skincare formulas. The result is targeted plant support, whether the goal is to calm, condition, brighten, balance the oil, or support the appearance of firmness and smoothness.
Why plant-based formulas feel gentler and perform better
Gunilla of Sweden® was built on a simple idea in 1987: when your skincare is plant-rich (often aloe vera), the skin tends to tolerate “high-performance ingredients” better. That matters because many effective skincare ingredients can feel irritating in a formula that’s mostly water or drying solvents.
When a product is over 50% botanical (often aloe), it can deliver hydration and comfort while still allowing advanced ingredients such as glycolic acid, retinol alternatives, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, peptides, and vitamins to work effectively without leaving your skin feeling stripped or stressed.
Not all botanicals are created equal
Quality matters. Plants grown in healthier environments and processed carefully tend to create better extracts. We source botanicals with that in mind, including hydroponically grown aloe used across Gunilla of Sweden® formulas. And because skin can only absorb so much at once, you don’t need a giant percentage of every extract to benefit, but you do want a formula that’s built on a plant-supportive base instead of mostly water.
Our approach at Gunilla of Sweden®
We use botanical blends across our skincare because they support visible results while keeping formulas comfortable for daily use.
-
GUNILLA® is our plant-based skincare line focused on hydration, glow, and anti-aging support.
-
LEROSETT® is our acne-focused line designed to calm problem skin and support clearer-looking skin using plant-based formulas.
-
Our clay masks are the exception: they’re not plant-based because they’re made from mineral-rich clay, formulated to deeply absorb excess oil and help keep pores looking clear.
Across both brands, we use a wide variety of botanicals from around the world to support different skin needs: calming, conditioning, balancing, brightening, and strengthening the overall look of the skin.
